Sterling Silver Wire Wrapped Gemstone Earrings - Kyanite, Moonstone, Garnet
These earrings are the first results of a metalsmithing class I took this spring where I began to learn how to solder. I soldered the center ring, then hammered it to make it flat. I cut the other wires from .999 fine silver wire, heated the ends with a torch to create the balls, then wrapped everything together with more sterling wire. I wasn't exactly sure what I was going to do with the ends to finish it up, so I just curled them around like you see in the pics and made a short segment of chainmaille to hook the ear wires on. For the gemstones, I wrapped some really pretty royal blue kyanite briolettes and made accents with the white-gray rainbow moonstone and light burgundy red rhodolite garnets. I thought these earrings would look gorgeous if they were antiqued, so I read about how to get other colors from silver besides black. I tried it and got these cool blue highlights, then polished them in my rock tumbler and by hand to bring out the highlights. Total length is 2.75", including the ear wires.
