Vintage Mexican Sterling Silver Opal Ring
This cabochon of orange opal is 5/8" long and stands .4" tall. It is bezel set in a niello setting, with all the characteristic twists and silver balls you would expect to see on an old pre- eagle registration Mexican silver ring. A faint sterling mark is all we see on the back. The opal itself is an incredible iridescent orange peering through the orange sherbet colored rhyolite surrounding it. Described by gemologists as a flash opal, the glimmer factor is brightly displayed in this vintage Mexican silver ring. The Aztecs described the opals as the hummingbird stone because of its iridescence. The earliest opals came from the Queretaro state. This opal has the mineral characteristics of the Queretaro opal, with the rhyolite matrix. It is a rare treat to find this old Mexican flash opal ring.
